Vajaa vuosi sitten viisi pääasiassa maya-intiaanien asuttamaa kylää sai aurinkosähkön Guatemalan itäosassa. Hanke on yksi Suomen ja Keski-Amerikan energia- ja ympäristökumppanuusohjelman kohteista. Kumppanuusohjelma käynnistyi vuonna 2002 YK:n kestävän kehityksen huippukokouksessa. Ohjelmassa ovat mukana seitsemän Keski-Amerikan maata ja Suomi.
