Thousands of children in Pakistan succumb to measles every year. All these deaths can be easily prevented with effective immunisation. The government has launched a comprehensive campaign against the disease, which will help protect 63 million children in the country.

Young students in Afghanistan unable to afford rentals and other expenses are forced to work on illicit poppy fields to earn some money. Not only do their studies suffer due to grueling work, but they also get exposed to the dangerous addiction of drugs.

A new report by International Labour Organisation says that cases of underage recruitment by the Burmese army are increasing, maintaining that the problem is far more serious than the figures suggest. Human rights groups term military junta’s claim of trying to end the scourge of forced conscription a blatant lie.

Un preoccupante calo delle notizie delle principali edizioni dei telegiornali RAI e Mediaset sulle crisi umanitarie che passano dal 10% del totale delle notizie del 2006 all’8% del 2007 e nessuna traccia della Repubblica Centrafricana dove la popolazione è intrappolata nella morsa degli scontri tra gruppi armati. E' quanto segnala il recente rapporto di Medici Senza Frontiere sulle "Crisi umanitarie dimenticate dai media", un'analisi elaborata con l'Osservatorio di Pavia. Alla malnutrizione che ogni anno uccide 5 milioni di bambini sono state dedicate dai TG solo 18 notizie, in buona parte per appelli del Papa, mentre la crisi del Darfur ha avuto una maggiore copertura mediatica soprattutto per la visita nella regione dell'attore George Clooney e di altri divi di Hollywood.

Radio and television broadcasters from around the world, whose programming best reflects the last year’s theme, The World We Want, and who demonstrate an overall dedication to youth participation in media will be awarded.

Punjab province in Pakistan has very high mortality rates for newborns, as a very small percentage of births take place under the supervision of trained attendants. UNICEF is now training midwives to prevent such deaths.

UNICEF's 2008 Humanitarian Action Report emphasises on greater accountability and leadership action by humanitarian agencies for 39 emergencies across the world. Apart from strengthening coordination between actors to ensure timely response, the report also claims it is important to train women and children to cope with disasters.
