When Nicholas Negroponte unveiled an idea for bridging the technology divide between rich nations and the developing world in 2005, it was captivating in its utter simplicity. The idea was to design a $100 laptop and get it into the hands of 150 million of the world's poorest schoolchildren.

Selama di rumah sakit tersebut, tidak ada perawat yang mau melayaniku. Mereka juga tidak mau mengurus bayiku. Aku sadar bahwa aku adalah Orang dengan HIV/AIDS (ODHA). Namun, apakah sehina itukah diriku di mata mereka?

La scorsa settimana, in occasione del 18esimo anniversario della convenzione Onu sui Diritti del Bambino si è tenuta in diversi paesi dell'America Latina una grande mobilitazione dei movimenti sociali per i diritti dell'infanzia. "Noi bambini esigiamo di vivere senza la guerra!", "Esigiamo il diritto al lavoro in condizioni dignitose per i bambini e adolescenti lavoratori NATs". Sono alcuni titoli dei manifesti colorati e degli slogan gridati in Piazza Bolivar a Bogotà, davanti al Parlamento, da un centinaio di bambini e adolescenti che si sono riuniti a livello nazionale. "Come a Bogotà anche a Lima (Perù), a Ciudad del Este (Paraguay) e a Cordoba (Argentina) i movimenti sociali NATs (Niños y Adolescentes Trabajadores) dell’America Latina hanno organizzato varie iniziative e manifestazioni in tutto il continente grazie anche alla cooperazione italiana" - riporta Cristiano Morsolin di Selvas.org.

Bill and Milinda Gates Foundation has extended a grant of 100 million dollars for polio eradication worldwide. The grant will target Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan, the last four countries in the world where fresh cases of polio still keep surfacing.

Paljastukset lapsityövoiman käytöstä Uzbekistanin puuvillapelloilla on pakottanut tekstiili- ja vaatetusalan yrityksiä selvittämään suhtautumistaan eettisesti kyseenalaisella tavalla tuotettuun raaka-aineeseen. Esimerkiksi Marimekko on keskeyttänyt puuvillaostot, H&M tutkii asiaa.

Penularan infeksi HIV dari ibu ke anak merupakan penyebab utama infeksi HIV pada anak usia di bawah 15 tahun. Sejak HIV menjadi pandemik di dunia, diperkirakan 5,1 juta anak di dunia terinfeksi HIV.

Aid agencies have put the total death count at over 5,000 – more than half being children – four days after Cyclone Sidr wrecked Bangladesh’s southern coast. An estimated 400,000 children under the age of five have been affected by the fatal storm in Bangladesh, with many drowning or being injured by falling trees.

Un rapporto pubblicato nei giorni scorsi dall'agenzia Onu Unaids corregge le stime precendenti sul numero di persone affette dal virus dell'Aids, da quasi 40 milioni a 33 milioni di cui 2,5 milioni sono bambini. Il calo è legato soprattutto alla revisione delle stime in India dove l'agenzia aveva stimato 5,7 milioni di malati, dato che ora ha più che dimezzato portandolo a 2,5 milioni. "Ma con oltre 6.800 nuove infezioni e oltre 5.700 morti al giorno per l'Aids, dobbiamo intensificare gli sforzi contro la diffusione della malattia" - afferma Unaids. Ad una settimana dalla Giornata Mondiale della lotta all’Aids, ActionAid invita i governi "a non abbassare la guardia e anzi a raddoppiare gli sforzi per mantenere le promesse per assicurare il raggiungimento dell’Obiettivo dell’accesso universale alle terapie entro il 2010".

No scholarships or unemployment allowance to the disabled, no financial assistance to widows, no juvenile shelter homes, no primary school for the deaf, no home for mentally retarded, no leprosy complex and no disbursement of funds to old-age homes. Despite availability of funds, the social welfare schemes of the Delhi government are in a shambles.

Kansainvälinen Child Rights Action Group muistuttaa tänään lasten oikeuksien päivänä, että yli miljardi lasta elää köyhyydessä, heistä yli 18 miljoonaa Euroopassa. Ryhmä vaatii, että EU:n tulisi saada aikaan lasten oikeuksien strategia.

A 18 anni dall'entrata in vigore della Convenzione Onu sui diritti dell'infanzia rimangono impressionanti le cifre diffuse oggi dall'Unicef in occasione della "Giornata internazionale per i diritti e l'infanzia e dall'adolescenza". Nel mondo ogni anno muoiono 9,7 milioni di bambini la maggior parte per denutrizione. I minori sono le prime vittime dei conflitti armati e preoccupante è il bilancio delle mine e delle "cluster bombs" che causano morte o menomazione permanente a migliaia di bambini. Il presidente di Unicef-Italia, Antonio Sclavi, in occasione della Giornata ha voluto sottolineare che "Per chi come noi si occupa di diritti umani è fondamentale ribadire con forza che 'sicurezza' ha un significato ampio, non significa soltanto "pubblica sicurezza", ossia l'attività della pubblica amministrazione diretta alla tutela dell'ordine pubblico, ma anche sicurezza sociale: misure, cioè, che garantiscano diritti quali l'istruzione, la salute, l'accesso ai servizi sociali".

A two-day Sub-Regional Conference in support of Global Literacy organised by the UNESCO will be held from November 29 at New Delhi. The First Ladies of 10 countries — Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan — have been invited to attend.

On the eve of Children’s Day in India, a petition signed by 300,001 children was submitted to the government, demanding 9% of the Gross Domestic Product to be invested in education and health.

The recent visit by the Queen of Netherlands to a school for slum children, run by Delhi based NGO Deepalaya, brought cheer to young lives. The children shared their experiences and talents on personal cleanliness and healthy living with the royal visitor.
