29.09.2006 Viidennen Progress for Children -raportin mukaan likainen vesi, huono hygienia ja puutteellinen sanitaatio johtavat joka vuosi yli 1,5 miljoonan alle 5-vuotiaan kuolemaan. Maailmassa on 425 miljoonaa lasta, joilla ei ole käytössään puhdasta vettä ja 980 miljoonalta puuttuu alkeellisinkin sanitaatio, kuten käymälät.

Kannanoton ovat allekirjoittaneet lapsikeskeistä kehitysyhteistyötä, kummilapsitoimintaa ja perhe- ja nuorisotyötä tekevät sekä lasten, naisten ja perheiden hyvinvointia ja oikeuksia ajavat järjestöt.

manifested in stunting in India⎯ranging from 22 to 56 per cent. A perhaps surprising finding is that inter-state differences in child stunting are not directly correlated to differences in income poverty. The variables with the highest explanatory power for stunting are child health-care provision and the fertility rate.
