Black carbon or soot is the second largest contributor to global warming after carbon dioxide and causes 1.6 million deaths worldwide every year. Using smoke free cookers and making economies less carbon intensive can curb soot emissions, says a study released in a British journal.

Kabul’s deteriorating environment is posing serious health risks to its population, according to Afghanistan ’s National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA). The use of sub-standard car fuel and poor waste management has worsened the city’s air quality leading to an increase in respiratory disorders.

Khonoma, a Naga village and a site for Tragopan sanctuary in north-east India, has set an example for eco-friendly tourism. If the Centre for Environmental Education’s awareness programme was a catalyst, the real thrust came from the village council, which played a crucial role in the nature conservation effort.

A modernisation programme by the Ministry of Earth Sciences will warn farmers about weather changes well in advance. The agro meteorological service centres of Indian Meteorological Department will be responsible for translating weather forecasts into farm advisories.

La Crbm con le altre Ong della coalizione 'Counter Balance' ha chiesto alla Banca Europea per gli Investimenti (BEI) di non fornire prestiti per la costruzione della diga di Gilgel Gibe III in Etiopia. "Nonostante la Banca Mondiale e l’Agenzia italiana di credito all’export (SACE) abbiano deciso di non sostenere né Gibe II né Gibe III, la BEI nel 2004 ha garantito un prestito di 50 milioni per la realizzazione della diga di Gibe II e al momento sta valutando se entrare nel progetto di Gibe III i cui impatti socio-ambientali sono devastanti" - afferma la Crbm che ha redatto un rapporto presentato venerdì scorso a Bruxelles. Nel 2004 il Ministero degli Esteri italiano ha elargito ben 220 milioni di euro per Gibe II - la più alta somma della storia del fondo rotativo per la cooperazione - mentre l’impresa Salini si è aggiudicata l’appalto senza gara internazionale.

Over a hundred survivors of Bhopal gas tragedy are marching to the Indian capital to demand clean-up of toxic wastes around the factory, rehabilitation of victims and legal action against responsible companies. Leakage of methyl isocyanate from a Union Carbide’s plant in 1984 is known as one of the worst industrial disaster ever.

When local populace and officials work in tandem, the chances of any conservation efforts succeeding are more. This became clear when villagers in the hilly state of Uttarakhand in northern India and forest department came together to help protect wildlife in the famous Jim Corbett National Park.
