22.06.2007 WASHINGTON, Jun 21 (IPS) - Environmental campaigners are urging several heavyweight investment firms, including Credit Suisse, Barclays, Fortis Group and Merrill Lynch, to shoulder some responsibility for a catastrophic mud volcano on the Indonesian island of Java that resulted from a gas project the firms helped fund.

15.06.2007 YK:n aavikoitumisen ja kuivuuden ehkäisemisen päiväa vietetään 17. kesäkuuta. Pääsihteeri Ban Ki-moon haluaa muistuttaa, ettei aavikoituminen ole vain yksi suurimmista ympäristöhaasteista, vaan samalla vakava perushyvinvointia haittaava tekijä kuivilla alueilla. Ban Ki-moon mukaan aavikoituminen vaarantaa 1,2 miljardin ihmisen terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin yli sadassa maassa.

Rankkasateiden ja tulvien odotetaan jatkuvan, sillä Kiinan jokavuotisen tulvakauden huippu on vasta edessä. Asiantuntijat varoittavat, että tulvat voivat tänä vuonna olla yhtä pahoja kuin vuonna 1998, jolloin Jangtse-joen tulvissa kuoli yli 3000 ihmistä.

Climate- an issue of immediate concern
11.06.2007 On the World Environment Day, June 6, just prior to G8 talks on climate change, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has formed an advisory panel that comprises government ministers as well as climate experts and industry representatives to formulate the country's strategy on climate change and its fallout.

08.06.2007 "I 60 miliardi annunciati non rappresentano nuovi impegni, sono semplicemente quelli già presi a Gleaneagles" - afferma un comunicato di ActionAid. "Il G8 avrebbe dovuto identificare i passi necessari per assicurare ulteriori aiuti per 50 miliardi di dollari entro il 2010, invece i leader hanno semplicemente riaffermato ciò che già sapevamo da due anni” - aggiunge ActionAid. Oggi i leader del G8 hanno raggiunto un accordo per destinare 60 miliardi di dollari di aiuti complessivi per la lotta all'Aids e alla tubercolosi in prevalenza per l'Africa. La metà della somma, 30 miliardi di dollari, sarà messa a disposizione dagli Stati Uniti, il resto dagli altri sette paesi del G8. L’Italia ha aderito dopo aver esitato a lungo. L'impegno di 60 miliardi non soddisfa gli Obiettivi delle Nazioni Unite fissati per allargare il trattamento di lotta alle epidemie.

Waste management or violation of rights

06.06.2007 "Le voci che ci giungono dal Vertice del G8 parlano di alcuni paesi, inclusi Italia e Canada, che stanno ostacolando i progressi nei negoziati per l’Africa" - afferma ActionAid UK. Alcuni paesi sembra vogliano rimuovere dal testo finale le poche cifre concrete presenti. “Se i paesi chiave mandano all’aria le trattative sugli aiuti e sull’Hiv, la credibilità dell’intero G8 è a rischio” - afferma ActionAid UK. Nei giorni scorsi ActionAid Italia sottolineava la "forte sensazione che l’Italia stia frenando la formulazione di un accordo finale che includa impegni quantitativi precisi sulle risorse destinate alla lotta alla povertà"; ma l'Associazione ONG italiane evidenziava "il segnale positivo dato dal Presidente Prodi nell’aver ascoltato le Ong prima della partenza per la Germania". L'Associazione nota però che "il G8 si è aperto nel peggiore dei modi possibili: nessun impegno quantitativo rispetto alla diminuzione delle emissioni di gas serra verrà sottoscritto dagli Stati Uniti".

05.06.2007 "Ghiaccio che si scioglie, un tema che scotta?" è lo slogan di quest'anno della Giornata mondiale dell'ambiente che si celebra oggi. L'Unep lancia la campagna "Pianta per il pianeta": un miliardo di alberi da piantare in tutto il mondo. Intanto in Germania stanno arrivando le delegazioni dei G8 (6-8 giugno) che vede l'ambiente fra i punti principali da discutere. "I rispettivi punti di partenza sono diversi, ma si va verso uno schema condiviso che lascia intravedere elementi di possibile intesa" - spiega Stefano Sannino, consigliere diplomatico del Presidente del Consiglio. Non si può parlare di accordo sulla definizione di target vincolanti per la riduzione delle emissioni di Co2, ma si registra un passo avanti con gli Usa che "riconoscono l'urgenza di intervenire con uno schema generale che operi a livello globale su tutti i Paesi, a partire da quelli piu' industrializzati, maggiori responsabili delle emissioni".
