A UN Population Fund (UNFPA) report indicates that more than half the global population, projected at 3.3 billion, will be living in towns and cities by 2008. In Asia the urban population will increase from 1.36 billion to 2.64 billion while Africa's urban population will go up from 294 million to 742 million, and that of Latin America and the Caribbean from 394 million to 609 million.

The mid-point to the 2015 deadline, 07.07.07, for meeting the Millennium Development Goals is just around the corner. NGOs worldwide are gearing up to press governments for faster action. In India, the UN Millennium Campaign and other civil society organizations are pushing the ruling UPA government to meet the MDG targets.

Though Asia has achieved economic growth along with poverty reduction in recent years economic growth alone does not guarantee poverty reduction. But this growth – and its impact on different aspects of development – has been uneven across and within countries.

The UN is rushing aid to victims of landslides that were triggered by heavy rains in the Chittagong district in east Bangladesh. A government report indicates that large numbers of people have been buried and the figures are expected to rise as rescue workers continue with operations.

Villagers in the north Indian state of Bihar are now members of the National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme (NREGA) thanks to a Korean biometric device. These smart cards will also double as ATM/debit cards and help track the NREG programme.

The Indian government plans to issue biometric identification cards to slum dwellers for the authenticity of their identity which, it is believed, will help them in getting low cost houses from the government.

Even as the world's richest eight countries meet at Heiligendamm in Germany for the 33rd G8 meet, civil society organisations from across the world have gathered to lobby with the leaders to do more to eradicate poverty. Oxfam International and the United Nations Millennium Campaign have both launched blogs that bring interesting news, insights and opinions from a NGO perspective.

Young participants from the world are gathering for the Junior 8 Summit, an international youth conference in Wismar, Germany, that parallels the G8 Summit in June in Heiligendamm, Germany. The conference of seventy-four young people – eight from each of the G8 countries and ten from developing nations will focus on economic, health and other development issues.

Oxfam charges G8 nations of falling far behind on pledges of aid to Africa in 2005, and puts pressure on them to live up to their commitments in the next upcoming summit from 6-8 June in Heiligendamm, Germany.
