30.06.2005 Dans le cadre de la XXXVe Assemblée générale de l’Organisation des États américains (OEA), qui a commencé aujourd’hui à Ft. Lauderdale, aux États-Unis, la Coalition internationale des organisations pour les droits humains dans les Amériques a adressé aux pays membres de l’OEA une série de recommandations sur des questions prioritaires touchant les droits humains. Dans la déclaration qu’elle a émise, la Coalition a signalé que la faiblesse des institutions démocratiques ainsi que l’exclusion et les inégalités sociales contribuent grandement à la fragilité de la démocratie dans les Amériques.

Flavio Lotti e la "white band"
30.06.2005 La Coalizione italiana contro la povertà, che raccoglie circa sessanta associazioni della società civile italiana ha ricordato al Governo italiano, a sei giorni dal G8, gli impegni assunti (e in gran parte disattesi) per il raggiungimento degli Obiettivi del Millennio stabiliti nel 2000 in sede Onu per combattere la povertà e l’ingiustizia. Su questo tema la Coalizione ha presentato due documenti di approfondimento e di proposte. All’incontro hanno partecipato, tra gli altri, Jovanotti e Antonello Venditti, due tra gli artisti italiani che parteciperanno al concerto del Live8 del 2 luglio a Roma. Il 1 luglio sarà la giornata mondiale di richiamo sui temi del G8, con l'esposizione della “white band”, una striscia di stoffa con la scritta “Stop alla povertà” prodotta in Italia in un milione di pezzi dalla città di Prato.

30.06.2005 Just days before the G8 summit, taking place next week in Scotland, international development organization, ActionAid has hit out at the developed nations for providing aid that serves their corporate interests, pushes privatization in recipient countries, funnels money to rich consultants and leaves the poor countries heavily indebted. 30.06.2005 At a Beijing meeting last week, UN special advisor Jeffrey Sachs asked China to take the lead in the fight against malaria. By cultivating a shrub that produces an anti–malarial medicine, China could make major contributions to reduce global poverty and meet the U.N. Millennium Development Goals.

With their rallying point next week’s G-8 summit, Evangelical, Protestant, and Catholic leaders are pressing President Bush and Congress to boost American leadership and financial commitment to the global campaign to make poverty history--and they are telling their congregations to do the same.

29.06.2005 Some of the world's most famous monuments--from St. Paul's Cathedral in London to a cotton tree planted by freed slaves in Sierra Leone--will be adorned with massive white cloths Friday as worldwide parties and demonstrations launch the first mass action in what many expect to be the largest anti-poverty campaign ever. 29.06.2005 A new report by the Brookings Institution shows President Bush has significantly exaggerated the amount of aid his administration has provided to sub-Saharan Africa. With the approaching G8 summit and recent aid commitments made by E.U. nations, Bush is facing increasing pressure to be more cooperative internationally and encourage the efforts of poor countries.

28.06.2005 Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said that the sagging farm sector growth, which has deprived the rural poor of substantial benefits, has to be doubled. He also stressed that the country will have to improve its performance in the water and the power sectors.

27.06.2005 Beyond the tourist havens of Buenos Aires and Patagonia, Argentina's economic fall-out is still visible: nearly 75% of children live in poverty and the political distrust--which cemented the economic collapse--continues as Kirchner’s administration is removed from the people. But in Tucumán, mothers team up to provide children with food and shelter--and alternatives to the gangs and drugs in their community.
