25.07.2005 The leadership asserted by the U.S. Congress one year ago, when it unanimously declared that genocide was taking place in the western Sudanese region of Darfur, has now dissipated, says Africa Action, faulting the legislators for failing to exert pressure on the Bush administration to provide protection for Darfur's civilians, where threats of sanctions and divestment have proved insufficient.

25.07.2005 By charging soldiers alleged to have violated human rights in Iraq with war crimes, the U.K. is taking its international obligations seriously and "blunting the ability of extremists to exploit the Iraq war," political analysts say. The U.S., by contrast, was seen by many as covering up misdeeds at Abu Ghraib prison when it tried nine soldiers only for "infringements of military code."

Iraqi Brothers Injured in Explosion
19.07.2005 An independent research team announced Tuesday that nearly 25,000 Iraqi civilians have met violent deaths in the two years after the U.S.-led invasion. The figures up to March 2005, compiled from Iraqi and international media reports, found coalition forces responsible for nearly 40% of the deaths, while insurgents accounted for only 9%.

19.07.2005 Because he grew up in Egypt and could speak Arabic, Aidan Delgado was able to communicate with the Iraqis he was sent to fight. "I felt like they were trapped in the war as much as I was and we were all victims of it, so I felt that fighting them would be wrong," said Delgado, who now speaks to high school students about "the ugly side of the war."

19.07.2005 On July 10, 1995, around 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were systematically massacred after the United Nations “safe area” of Srebrenica fell to the Bosnian Serb Army. Ten years later, relatives are still waiting for the Bosnian Serb authorities to tell them exactly what happened to their family members. Amnesty is asking people to write polite letters expressing concern that many of the perpetrators of the Srebrenica massacre have yet to be brought to justice.

18.07.2005 The U.S. House of Representatives has passed an amendment blocking the administration's plan to supply the Haitian National Police with arms. Although many Haitian police officers are fighting crime, the force as a whole is a cause of the violence, not a solution, says Brian Concannon, director of the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti.

18.07.2005 Since former president of Haiti, Jean Bertrand Aristide, was ousted from power last year, people in pro-Aristide neighborhoods in the capital, Port-au-Prince, have faced extreme repression at the hands of Haitian police. U.S.-based human rights and trade union activists say they have evidence proving that U.N. military forces carried out a "massacre" in Cite Soleil on Jul. 6, and would like the U.N. to investigate.

Jean Bertrand Aristide
17.07.2005 Former Haitian president Jean Bertrand Aristide was forced from power in a 2004 coup widely considered to have been supported by the U.S., but what was the cause of his dramatic falling out with Washington? "Privatization, privatization, and privatization," Aristide says in an interview with journalist Naomi Klein, detailing how his economic policy ran counter to U.S. interests, eventually costing him his presidency.
