The Report tries to grasp the implications of the imminent doubling of the developing world’s urban population and discusses what needs to be done to prepare for this massive increase.

A UN Population Fund (UNFPA) report indicates that more than half the global population, projected at 3.3 billion, will be living in towns and cities by 2008. In Asia the urban population will increase from 1.36 billion to 2.64 billion while Africa's urban population will go up from 294 million to 742 million, and that of Latin America and the Caribbean from 394 million to 609 million.

Dozens of villages have been flooded; houses, fields and trees have disappeared under water and people have became landless, since the government of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh closed the gates of the Omkareshwar dam in the Narmada valley. Support the demands of the people in the Narmada Valley by sending the letter to the Chief Minister of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh for adequate compensation and rehabilitation for the people.

India joins Washington Accord, a 10-member apex global organisation that determines standards of engineering education. This means that Indian undergraduate engineering degree will ultimately be given "equivalency" in all member countries.

The Strengthening Rural Credit Cooperatives Project of the World Bank supports the Indian Government programme to reform and revitalise the country's rural Credit Cooperative Banks (CCBs) by making them efficient and commercially-viable institutions that also are responsive to the financial needs of the Indian farmers.

The government of the south Indian state of Kerala has made it clear that discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS will not be tolerated and has readmitted HIV-positive children who were dismissed from a school in December 2006.

In November 2006, a High-level Panel recommended the establishment of an independent women-specific agency with a minimum budget of $1 billion US. Women's organisations and other groups from the civil society held a global day of action on 20th June, 2007 and urged their respective Governments, UN Permanent Missions and Ambassadors to endorse and push for the GEA recommendations.

Concerned over the massive industrialisation planned for Indian state Orissa, environmental campaigner Greenpeace is alarmed over an Indian steel major's move to set up a mega port in Dhamra in Orissa's coastal Bhardrak district, saying it would be an 'ecological destruction' in the state's coastal areas.

Though Asia has achieved economic growth along with poverty reduction in recent years economic growth alone does not guarantee poverty reduction. But this growth – and its impact on different aspects of development – has been uneven across and within countries.

Delhi based NGO Toxics Link has urged the Indian government to phase out the usage of mercury in the country after the European Union Parliament banned mercury trade. India being the second largest user and importer of the heavy metal, at the same time time it has serious public health implications in the country.
