30.11.2004 An estimated 850,000 to 950,000 U.S. residents are living with HIV and about 40,000 are newly infected each year. Leaders--from President Bush on down--need to address the issue and fund a "social vaccine" program that will save lives and save billions of dollars in health care costs, says Frank Beadle de Palomo, director of the AED Center on AIDS & Community Health.

Somali women leaders
30.11.2004 As the new Somali president and prime minister begin to assemble their cabinet, with hopes of returning a stable government to Mogadishu in January for the first time since 1991, NGOs are demanding that women be given "significant ministries" to reflect their true position in Somali society.

Ijad Allawi
30.11.2004 Irakissa yhä useammat ovat menettäneet luottamuksensa amerikkalaisten nimittämään väliaikaiseen pääministeriin Ijad Allawiin, ja häntä on alettu verrata Saddam Husseiniin. Allawi on mm. uhkaillut toimittajia pidätyksillä ja kieltänyt televisiokanavan al-Jazeeran toiminnan maassa. Hallituksen oikeusministeri on palauttanut kuolemanrangaistuksen ja puhunut kapinallisten päiden ja käsien katkomisesta.

30 novembre - Sciopero generale

29.11.2004 For Paul Martin, George W. Bush's official visit to Ottawa this week after taking control of the White House for another four years, not only signals a new era in Canada-U.S. relations. It could also be the launching pad of a new political agenda for continental security. Fifteen years after bringing us the Free Trade Agreement, Bay Street is quietly lobbying for a new form of economic union and trade deal with America. The C.D. Howe Institute calls it the "Big Idea" and others the "Grand Bargain."

29.11.2004 The Bush administration is facing an early test of its interest in easing tensions with traditional U.S. allies in the 2005 foreign-aid bill which bans some US$2.5 billion in economic assistance for friendly governments that have not ratified a “bilateral immunity agreement” (BIA) with Washington to shield U.S. nationals from the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

29.11.2004 Computerisation of government services is not without its hassles. Some 80,000 out of total 100000 terminals in the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) of UK government are knocked down as soon as newer versions of software are installed.
