Joulukuun presidentin- ja eduskuntavaalit kuumentavat poliittista ilmapiiriä Keniassa. Mielipidetiedustelujen mukaan nykyinen presidentti Mwai Kibaki saisi 45 prosentin kannatuksen. Oppositio ei ole kyennyt sopimaan yhteisestä pääehdokkaasta, mikä heikentää sen mahdollisuuksia. Eduskuntantaan valitaan 210 kansanedustajaa ja rekisteröityneitä puolueita on 250.

Sierra Leonessa viisi vuotte sitten solmittu rauha on kestänyt hyvin, mutta ihmisten elinolot eivät ole juurikaan kohentuneet. Lauantaina maassa käydään vaaliuurnille ensimmäistä kertaa ilman YK:n rauhanturvaajien tarjoamaa suojaa.
