17.03.2008 Amnesty International e Human Right Watch condannano la repressione delle forze di sicurezza cinesi nei confronti dei manifestanti di Lhasa nel Tibet e chiedono alle autorità di Pechino moderazione nella reazione alle manifestazioni e di autorizzare un'inchiesta indipendente dell'Onu sui fatti. Anche il Dalai Lama ha chiesto l’avvio di un’inchiesta internazionale. In assenza di riscontri indipendenti, i bilanci dei disordini continuano a restare fermi ai 10 morti "ufficiali" forniti dal governo cinese mentre il governo in esilio ha parlato di 80 morti ammettendo però di avere a disposizione "cifre difficilmente verificabili". Il governo cinese ha lanciato un ultimatum ai manifestanti affermando che entro lunedì la protesta deve finire "se non si vogliono conseguenze ancora più gravi" - riporta Asianews.
