Sri Lankan journalists are worried about their safety as authorities have been hostile to them and are creating a climate of self-censorship. The International Press Freedom and Freedom of Expression Mission to Sri Lanka has found that even ministers threaten scribes.

Etiopian korkein oikeus on tuominnut neljä toimittajaa ja kolme kustantajaa hallituksen vastaisesta toiminnasta. Osaa heistä odottaa jopa kuolemantuomio. Toimittajien turvallisuutta seuraavan CPJ-komitean mukaan lehdistönvapaus on viime vuosina huonontunut eniten juuri Etiopiassa.

Pakistani President Gen. Pervez Musharraf's decree gives the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulation Authority (PEMRA) the unfettered power to halt broadcast transmissions and increases fines tenfold for violations. Asia director at Human Rights Watch Brad Adams criticises the Presidential Decree and calls it a disgraceful assault on the media.

There have been a series of targeted attacks perpetrated against Papernas in recent times. Although a number of complaints have been filed against the perpetrators, there has been inadequate police investigations and action taken on these cases.
