Labouring on embroidery

17.10.2007 Oggi quasi un miliardo di persone, 980 milioni per l'esattezza, vive in condizioni di estrema povertà con meno di un dollaro al giorno. Lo riportano le Nazione Unite nella "Giornata internazionale di lotta alla povertà" che si è celebrata oggi, 17 ottobre. A vent'anni dalla prima Giornata internazionale, l'Africa sub-sahariana continua a mantenere il triste primato con un numero di poveri pressochè invariato che supera i 300 milioni. Secondo la Banca Mondiale, se il trend attuale continua la povertà diminuirà entro il 2015 solo del 10%, ben lontano dal primo degli Obiettivi del Millennio, il dimezzamento della povertà nel mondo. Per questo oggi la Campagna internazionale per gli Obiettivi ha chiesto a tutti di "Stand up", alzare la propria voce per richiamare i leader di governo a mettere in atto politiche per realizzare gli Obiettivi stabiliti all'Onu nel 2000.

15.10.2007 A WHO led campaign in South and Southeast Asia has called for inclusion of nutrition issues in government programmes on HIV/AIDS. Experts are of the opinion that nutrition can go a long way in treating the disease as well as preventing mother-to-child transmission.

03.10.2007 The National Nutrition Conclave marked the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi by releasing a book of recommendations on how to attain a nutrition-secure India. The conclave comprises a diverse group of government officials, NGOs, civil society, corporate leaders, nutrition experts, activists and academics, who gathered at the capital’s National Academy of Agricultural Sciences for the event.
