13.11.2006 E' stato subito oggetto di polemiche il riconoscimento pubblico accordato dalla Commissione Europea ad alcune grandi multinazionali alimentari "per il loro impegno nella lotta all’obesità": tra queste Coca Cola e Pepsi, Unilever e Kraft e il gigante mondiale del fast food McDonald’s, tutte imprese che negli Stati Uniti sono accusate di essere responsabili del boom dell’obesità. "In 40 anni di giornalismo non ho mai visto una conferenza stampa che sostiene tanto le imprese come questa" – ha dichiarato uno dei corrispondenti. Il commissario europeo alla Salute Markos Kyprianou ha replicato di "non essere sorpreso della reazione, visto che si tratta di un nuovo approccio". Ma gli "impegni" assunti dalle multinazionali non vanno oltre la pubblicazione di informazioni nutrizionali o la sola dichiazione di voler sospendere le campagne pubblicitarie rivolte ai minori di 12 anni. In Europa un bambino su 5 è in sovrappeso, sono 14 milioni i bambini obesi e il loro numero cresce rapidamente di 400mila l’anno.

Recent study by Kamala Gupta et.al based on the Third National Family Health Survey (2005-06) show that some health and family welfare indicators have improved markedly in the past seven years, while nutritional deficiencies remain a major challenge.

06.11.2006 Si è chiusa la due giorni organizzata dal Comitato Italiano per la Sovranità Alimentare dopo aver partecipato alla discussione interna alla FAO durante lo Special Forum insieme ai rappresentanti di oltre 350 organizzazioni di piccoli produttori del sud del mondo. La straordinaria mobilitazione che abbiamo compiuto in questo mese non si ferma alla consultazione della FAO: il nostro lavoro continua con l'obiettivo generale di affermare la Sovranità Alimentare come diritto che deve essere recepito dagli ordinamenti giuridici internazionali. Ripartiamo proprio sui temi che sono stati sollevati durante il Seminario internazionale come la discussione in seno alla Commissione Europea sulla soglia di tolleranza nei cibi e prodotti biologici di transgenico: l'Europa dopo aver chiesto un'improbabile "coesistenza" tra biologico e ogm nelle nostre agricolture, ora cerca di far passare ed accettare l'inevitabile contaminazione delle sementi e delle coltivazioni biologiche introducendo la percentuale dello 0,9 tollerata di ogm nei prodotti bio.
