30.10.2007 The Jatropha scrub weed can weather droughts, stop soil erosion, transform barren lands into lush greenery, while providing self-sufficient energy for rural communities – all at the same time. While India has plans to make the plant its chief biofuel source, there is little knowledge on the environmental impact of its cultivation.

25.10.2007 Following reports of tigers vanishing from the Sariska Tiger Reserve in the western state of Rajasthan, the state forest department and the Ministry of Environment and Forests have worked out voluntary relocation packages for families living in 11 villages in Sariska. The move will hopefully help bring India’s national animal back to the reserve.

24.10.2007 The World Sustainable Development Forum is organizing Delhi Sustainable Development Summit in New Delhi on 7-9 February 2008 to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Noble laureate R.K. Pachauri says in his message that the summit assumes unusual importance because it will deal with the theme of sustainable development and climate change.

23.10.2007 A power conservation drive has made villages in the northern Indian state of Haryana switch over to Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL). Binola in Gurgaon was the first village to be lit up by CFL this year, followed by Sirsa, India’s first and only 100% CFL-electrified district.
